Apoptosis is considered a normal component of the development and health of multicellular organisms (like dogs and people). Cells die all the time in response to a variety of stimuli. During apoptosis, cells die in a controlled and regulated fashion.
This makes apoptosis distinct from another form of cell death which is called necrosis. Necrosis is uncontrolled cell death and can lead to lysis of cells, inflammatory responses and, potentially, to serious health problems.
Apoptosis, on the other hand, is a process in which cells play an active role in their own death. This is why apoptosis is sometimes referred to as “cell suicide.”
